Situation:
In 2007, two business Owners had come together to combine their marketing expertise and copyrighting capabilities in a company partnership, and to author a book and help teach others how to market. They asked me to help them booking seminars and gathering attendees to attend the seminars so they could teach their techniques and promote their book.
Obstacles:
They were struggling to find attendees for the seminars, and the books didn’t seem to be selling as quickly as they’d have liked. The authors had put so much time, effort, energy and money into writing and publishing the book and hosting these seminars, but to me they didn’t seem to really enjoy the seminars and really more enjoyed the actual marketing and copyrighting.
Actions:
We had several meetings where I learned what their over-arching goals were. Something didn’t seem to be adding up, because they didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about their goals. I started to dig deeper into what they were enjoying in the process, and what their deep-down ultimate goals and passions were. I started picking up on several things that were blocking them. Over the course of the meetings, and eventually a longer deep-dive meeting, I came to understand (1) they were not enjoying fully what they were doing, but really liked the work of marketing and copyrighting, not the writing and promoting of the book or the seminars, and (2) they were carrying underlying thoughts and beliefs that were putting their energy at odds with their goals (such as: old childhood beliefs, insecurities, prior perceived failures, “it could never happen” for them, no one would ever be interested in what they had to offer, their ideas weren’t new or helpful, it was difficult to sell books, etc.), and these were contributing to some of the blocks keeping them from moving forward. We did some talking and coaching and some simple energy therapy techniques to release those blocks, and then we had to get them focused on and transitioned into what it was they did enjoy if this wasn’t it. We created a plan that allowed them to comfortably transition out of selling the books and booking the seminars, and at the same time pursue avenues for them to write and do marketing.
Result:
In only a month and a half they had found and were in new roles that they enjoyed.
